1. What a thermographic camera can show

A thermographic camera shows differences in infrared radiation associated with surface temperature. In this activity, you will not carry out a full professional audit. You will use visual evidence to answer a simple question:
Where do heat sources or relatively warmer surfaces appear in a technical room?
What to look for in a thermographic image
Use the image to separate what you see from what you interpret: first note the visible contrast, then identify the actual object, and finally assess your confidence.
A bright or warm-coloured area may indicate a surface that is warmer than its surroundings, but this is not enough to state an exact temperature without a clearly visible numerical temperature measurement.
Explain the difference between an observation and an interpretation in a thermographic image. Give one example of each.

2. Observe thermal evidence

Open the lab and use the laboratory measurement with servers or electronic equipment, because this is the confirmed route for observing clear thermal contrasts in the validated scene.
For the 40-minute compact option, complete one neutral, well-supported observation row about any clearly visible object or surface. For the 50-minute full option, complete three neutral rows about any three clearly visible objects or surfaces. Classify only after examining the evidence. Categories may repeat when justified, especially uncertain.
Recommended measurement route
Follow one specific route and keep each row linked to one measurement. If you compare a different scene, start a new row and explain the difference.

In the compact option, complete one well-supported observation row. In the full option, repeat the process for two other visible surfaces in the same measurement. If your teacher has prepared and checked other measurements for the session, you may use them as an extension.

Thermographic observation and recording
The main evidence is the observed thermal pattern, but your answer must also identify the actual object, give an interpretation, and assess your confidence.
Thermographic evidence
Compact option: complete one neutral, well-supported observation row. Full option: complete all three observation rows. Classify only after examining the evidence; categories may repeat when justified, especially Uncertain. Identify the measurement used in every completed row. Under confidence, write High, Medium, or Low and add a reason; for example, 'High: the warm area was clear throughout the video' or 'Low: the scale was not visible'. The heat-transfer field is optional; if you use it, state a hypothesis rather than a conclusion because thermographic contrast alone cannot establish conduction, convection, or radiation.

Discuss the confidence in your completed evidence. In the compact option, identify your one row, state exactly what you saw, and justify its confidence level. In the full option, compare confidence across all three rows using your observations. Confidence may be the same for all three rows or higher in some rows than in others; it may also be mixed or uncertain. Explain the pattern you report.
3. From image to decision

Classify every row required by your option: one row in the compact option or three rows in the full option. Use exactly one category for each row: heat-producing object, cooler reference surface, non-source surface that may have been warmed by nearby equipment, or uncertain. Categories may repeat when supported, especially uncertain. Explain at least one classification using your observation. Do not classify the same object as both a heat-producing object and a possibly warmed non-source surface.
Choose one completed row and recommend the response that its evidence supports. You may: propose an improvement, such as improving ventilation, separating equipment, removing an airflow obstruction, or switching off an unnecessary source; recommend no change and explain why intervention is not supported; or, if the row is uncertain, specify a concrete further observation or measurement needed before deciding. Link your response to that row.
4. Heat detective report

Write a report for the school or workshop. In the compact option, write 3–4 sentences; in the full option, write a fuller report and compare the confidence or uncertainty of your rows. In either option include:
1. One area, several areas that stand out equally, or a justified statement that no area stands out.
2. What you observed.
3. Your interpretation.
4. An evidence-based recommendation: an improvement, no change, or a concrete next observation or measurement.
5. One limitation of your evidence.
